History and Heritage
Upland has a fascinating history that dates back to the 18th century when it was part of the land grant given to the San Gabriel Mission by the Spanish crown in 1771. The mission established a supply station in the area to serve travelers on the Old Spanish Trail, which connected Arizona and California. The station was called Rancho Cucamonga, and it covered most of present-day Upland and neighboring cities.
In 1882, George and William Chaffey bought 6,216 acres of land from the owners of Rancho Cucamonga and named their new town Ontario, after their home province in Canada.
